Royal Enfield’s Unexpected Haute Couture Helmet

The people's motorcycle brand has teamed up with British helmet maker Hedon to create something rather beautiful, entirely extravagant and almost as expensive as the motorcycle itself.

One of the things I’ve always liked about Royal Enfield is how little ego is attached to the brand. Its motorcycles are approachable, affordable, generally reliable and full of character, with a history that stretches back further than just about anyone else’s. You’ll find all sorts of people riding them, from first-time motorcyclists to people who have owned more expensive machines than they’d probably care to admit. They’re very much the people’s motorcycle, which makes the brand’s latest collaboration with luxury British helmet maker Hedon all the more amusing.

To celebrate its 125th anniversary, Royal Enfield has commissioned a collection of just 16 helmets, each handmade to order at Hedon’s London workshop and inspired by the recently introduced Bullet 650. There are eight open-face Hedonist models and eight full-face Heroine Racer 2.0s, finished in a lovely combination of cream, black, red and chrome. And while the helmets themselves are beautiful, it’s the price that really caught my attention. The Hedonist comes in at $3,207, while the Heroine Racer is a little over $4,000. As if to underline the absurdity, while I was writing this piece, an email arrived from Royal Enfield announcing, “Hunter 350 from $6,990 Ride Away!” At that price, you could almost argue the motorcycle is the accessory.

Now, I should probably disclose that I’ve owned a cream Hedonist open-face helmet for the past five years, so I’m hardly an impartial observer. I’ve always loved the colours, materials and little details that make Hedon helmets feel quite different from most of what’s on the market. I still wish they’d managed to make them look a little less bobble-headed, although I appreciate that modern safety standards don’t make life particularly easy for helmet designers. In any case, Hedon rarely makes an ugly helmet, so asking them to collaborate on something beautiful is almost cheating.

The resulting collection certainly looks the part, as does the accompanying campaign, which places the helmets and a black-and-gold Bullet 650 in what looks like a slightly eccentric family portrait, complete with a painted garden backdrop and some excellent wardrobe choices. It’s a playful mix of the two brands, and refreshingly different in an industry guilty of rinsing and repeating.

Of course, there is something inherently absurd about a company celebrated for making affordable motorcycles putting its name on a helmet that costs more than most people spend on their entire riding wardrobe. But I also quite like the audacity. Motorcycling has always had room for people who simply want to get from A to B, alongside those who obsess over the stitching on their leather gloves or the exact shade of cream on a fuel tank. That’s part of its appeal.

And while I’m generally not in favour of brands pricing out the very people who made them popular in the first place, I don’t think that’s what’s happening here. If anything, this feels like Royal Enfield’s equivalent of a haute couture collection. An extravagant, beautifully made little indulgence that can exist quite happily alongside the ready-to-wear range without making the everyday stuff any less accessible.

Whether anyone actually needs a $4,000 helmet to ride their $7,000 motorcycle is another question entirely. But then, nobody ever accused motorcyclists of being completely rational about the things they love.
