There’s something about watching a real-life love affair onscreen. Not in a Bachelorette kind of way, but acting sweethearts, cast together to lean on their relationship for our collective entertainment. Yes, there might be a perverse thrill in it, wondering if this is really how they are at home. I can’t help but muse on Pitt and Jolie in Mr. & Mrs. Smith… But if they are a treat, then the sovereign leaders of Spanish cinema, Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem, are a whole other level.
After the brilliant The Father (2020) and then the ever-disappointing The Son (2022), French writer-director Florian Zeller is back with Bunker, a new film that leans on his sweet, tender, and thoughtful writing, sometimes at the expense of being a little too on the nose.
“From the very beginning, I was most interested in having them (Cruz and Bardem) together onscreen, because I thought it would be a unique way to catch something special,” Zeller said at the Venice press conference, adding: “To blur the line between reality and fiction, and to approach the burning authenticity of the truth.”
