From Childhood Fascination to Design Mastery

Patryk Koca’s journey into design began long before his formal education. “I’ve always had a passion for made objects,” he reflects. “It started with cars when I was a kid, trying to understand how design makes them so desirable.” This early fascination with design quickly expanded to include all manner of household projects, from furniture to ceramics. By the time he reached university, Koca had become fixated on continuous improvement and problem-solving—skills that would become foundational in his approach to creating beautiful, commercially viable products.

After earning his degree in Industrial Design from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), Koca set out to gain diverse experience in the field, with a clear goal in mind: “One day to design my own pieces of furniture for brands that align with my passion for quality and beauty”​.

A Design Philosophy Rooted in Responsibility

Koca’s design philosophy is deeply informed by a sense of responsibility, both to the environment and to the consumers who engage with his products. “Today, every design needs to be justified before it is made,” Koca explains. “We need to take responsibility for the impact we have on the environment when creating products.” This commitment is evident in his use of sustainably sourced timber and other renewable materials, which are at the core of his practice. For Koca, the goal is not just to create products that are aesthetically pleasing, but also long-lasting and meaningful to consumers​.

Navigating the Evolving Australian Design Scene

Since graduating in 2012, Koca has witnessed significant changes in the Australian design scene. “When I graduated, most established designers were seeking opportunities overseas,” he recalls. Local opportunities for commercializing design work were limited, with few avenues for showcasing prototypes beyond niche exhibitions. However, the last decade has seen a dramatic shift. “Most established distributors have started in-house brands focused on local designers and manufacturing,” Koca notes. This shift, bolstered by the support of interior architects and the rise of social media, has allowed Australian designers like Koca to gain greater visibility and success on both local and international stages​.

Global Collaborations and the Future of Design

Koca’s work is not confined to Australia; he has successfully established a global presence through collaborations with international brands. His partnership with the overseas brand Sketch began in late 2019, just before the pandemic. Despite the challenges posed by global lockdowns, this collaboration flourished. “They were seeking a fresh perspective on design, unshackled by the weight of the great Scandinavian design masters,” Koca says. The relationship, built on trust and mutual respect, has continued to thrive, resulting in a series of innovative projects that highlight Koca’s ability to blend functional design with artistic elegance​.

Signature Pieces and Where to Find Them

Among Koca’s recent works, the Sensu Bed stands out as a favorite. Paired with the Tye nightstand, these pieces exemplify his commitment to craftsmanship and quality, both available through Trit House. Another standout piece is the Coulee Daybed, a design that continues to turn heads four years after its creation. Made to order by Hegi Design House on the NSW South Coast, the Coulee Daybed is a testament to Koca’s ability to create timeless designs that resonate with consumers long after their initial release​.

As Patryk Koca continues to push the boundaries of contemporary design, his work remains a beacon of sustainability, functionality, and beauty. Whether crafting a minimalist chair or a bold statement table, Koca’s designs are always grounded in a deep respect for materials and a commitment to creating products that will endure for generations.
